Walk Leader: James Dudbridge
Six walkers met outside the Talbot Inn, Mells, for our June Amblers’ walk. We covered a distance of approximately 5.1 miles.
After a short distance from the Inn we passed the war memorial and the Mells Village Shop and Café and walked into the tree lined Wadbury Valley, walking alongside the Mells Stream and passing the remains of the Fussell’s Lower Iron Works.

After approximately two miles, we reached the outskirts of Great Elm, leaving the Mells Stream and the shady wooded valley behind us, and ascending up to open countryside. We walked along the ridgeline with views across to Buckland Dinham and Cley Hill to the north and glimpsed the Westbury Whitehorse in the far distance.

We then descended back down towards Mells walking over Conduit Bridge which crosses the old Frome and Radstock railway, which is now National Cycle Route 24.
Towards the end of the walk we entered a large open grass field, walking down towards St Andrews Church and Mells Manor.

Whilst walking through St Andrews Church graveyard, we located the grave of Siegfried Sassoon, the famous poet. He is best known for his poems reflecting his experiences in World War 1.

Once we returned to the village, we visited the Mells Café for some coffee and an enjoyable light lunch.
