Amblers: Combe Down – 4½ miles
10th August 2024 at 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

The walk will initially take us through Combe Down, with good views to our right of Horsecombe Vale which, until the end of WW2, was worked for the extraction of Fullers Earth, which was used historically for cleaning sheep’s wool.
During the walk, we will also have a view of Midford Castle, a folly castle built in 1775 and once owned by Nicolas Cage.
In addition, we will see remnants of the Somerset Coal Canal, which was built around 1800 and allowed coal from the Somerset collieries to be transported to London, linking up with the Kennet and Avon Canal at Limpley Stoke.
Towards the end of the walk, we will walk through the picturesque village of Southstoke before returning to our starting point. Whilst in the village, we will visit the South Stoke Millennium viewpoint to admire the views over the Southern Bathscape.
