8 of us met up at Keynsham to begin the first walk for some weeks on account of the heatwaves. Numbers lower than usual possibly because of the recent uncomfortable heat but we were forecast temperatures a bit lower than it has been. Also the planned walk albeit high on Mendip required minimal climbing.
After briefing and directions we set off for New Manor Farm and the Stables Tea Room close to Chew Valley Lake. Very pleasant café in attractive surroundings. Suitably refreshed we continued to Burrington Combe (more like Cheddar Gorge) where the road climbs steadily until we reached the car park at the top where we fortunately found spaces available. We set off up a short stony track through trees to emerge on Burrington Ham.
This is the largest common in the Mendip Hills AONB. Covered in tall bracken usually controlled by grazing cattle, ponies and goats; but we saw none of these on our walk. Continuing along a flat path we had great views of Black Down the highest point on Mendip until we reached the edge of the 370 ft high cliffs with dramatic views of the road through the gorge below. Fortunately, not too windy!!
Our path began a gentle decent with views across the Severn into Wales until we reached a striking rocky outcrop which made a useful stop for a drink. This was the site of an iron-age settlement almost 3000 years ago.
With the temperature rising and little opportunity to seek shade, we opted to take a shorter path back, to avoid a stony climb, on to the common and then back to our cars. We headed for the Castle of Comfort pub near East Harptree where lunch was booked. The route took us along a road built by the Romans to transport lead from the mines at Charterhouse (possible site for a future walk?). Lucky we had booked as this pub is very popular and car park almost full. We enjoyed a very good value lunch served with generous portions and plenty of time to relax and chat before setting off home. A gentle fairly level walk on high ground with great views in very pleasant company which was enjoyed by all.
